“First of all, if you read back on Lincoln, he loved telling the occasional bawdy joke and being out among regular folks,” said President Obama today in a barely veiled shot at Bill O’Reilly, author of the historical thriller Killing Lincoln. The president was hitting back at the O’Reilly’s argument that his more dignified predecessor would never have appeared on “Between Two Ferns” with Zach Galifianakis, despite the fact that Lincoln was a noted lover of jokes about fleas and farts. He probably would’ve loved The Hangover.
“One of the hardest things about being president is being in this bubble that is artificial, and and unless you make a conscious effort, you start sounding like some washed-up Washington stiff,” said Obama, simultaneously defending his appearances with Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres. Or, say, a pre-Super Bowl sit down with a right-wing blowhard, which likely resulted in the same amount of laughs.
