Shooting Aboard USS Mahan Leaves Two Dead at World’s Largest Naval Base

A file picture taken on March 16, 2009, shows Egyptians watching guided missile destroyer USS Mahan crossing the Suez Canal near Egypt's port city of Ismailia as it travels back to the US. USS Mahan left the Mediterranean Sea on September 3, 2013 while a battle group of warships led by the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is on its way to the Red Sea from the Indian Ocean, an official said, as the US prepares itself for possible military action in Syria following an alleged chemical weapons attack on the outskirts of Damascus. A sailor was murdered last night at the Naval Station Norfolk, in Virginia, before security killed the suspected gunman aboard the USS Mahan, a guided-missile destroyer recently back from the Syrian coast. According to the Navy, the shooter was a civilian but “had access” to the base, which is heavily guarded. After a brief lockdown following the 11:20 p.m. shooting, operations had returned to normal, the AP reports. Recently, in the wake of the Washington Navy Yard mass-shooting, Norfolk practiced anti-terrorism exercises and an active-shooter drill.
