The man born Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., but better known as Glenn Miller, a Ku Klux Klan member long hiding and plotting in plain sight, will be charged with hate crimes in the murder of three people in front of a Jewish community center and retirement home yesterday, despite the fact that none of his victims were actually Jewish.
Intent, however, can be enough. “We believe this to be a hate crime,” said Overland Park police chief John Douglass today. “We believe his motivation was to attack a Jewish facility.” U.S. attorney Barry Grissom added, “We are in a very good place from an evidence standpoint,” and not just because Miller allegedly yelled “Heil Hitler!” from the back of a police car.
The 73-year-old was well known to the hate-group watchdogs at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which maintained a detailed dossier on him even before yesterday’s shooting, describing his criminal history as such:
In 1986, Miller was convicted on a federal contempt of court charge after violating the terms of a consent order that settled a lawsuit filed against him and his Klan group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. He was sentenced to a year in prison, with six months suspended. However, he disappeared while out on bond awaiting an appeal and was later caught in Missouri along with four other Klansmen and a cache of weapons.
In 1987, he pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and to mailing a threat through the mail. He had been indicted along with four other white supremacists for conspiring to acquire stolen military weapons, and for planning robberies and the assassination of SPLC founder Morris Dees. In an agreement with federal prosecutors, he received a five-year prison sentence in exchange for his testimony against 14 white supremacist leaders in a sedition trial. He served three years of that sentence.
But beyond his past offenses, Miller left behind a vast personal mythology of white supremacy and anti-Semitism as catalogued on his disturbing, web 1.0 site, complete with a waving Confederate flag GIF. In addition to posting frequently on white-power message boards like Stormfront and Vanguard News Network (“No Jews, Just Right”), Miller self-published a book with his rantings, titled A White Man Speaks Out, beginning with chapter one, “Joining My First Racist Group (1974)” and ending with a section called “War Declaration.”
In “White Women,” Miller writes:
Our women have become whores for the world, thanks to Jewish created “popular culture” and Jewish corrupted judges, and politicians, who over the decades, have thrown out all laws designed by our forefathers to insure racial survival and the White man’s authority over his women, children, country, and destiny. […]
The so-called Women’s Rights Movement would never have come about without the Jews. The original movers of this anti-White conspiracy were Gloria Steinem, Belia Abzug, and Betty Freidan, all Jews. Gullible White women believe these Jews have their interests at heart, but in reality, these fanatical, Aryan-hating pied-piper bitches are working to further the Jewish agenda.
Miller appeared on the radio in 2010, during an independent Senate campaign in which he collected seven votes (slogan: “It’s the Jews, Stupid”), with David Pakman and Howard Stern. “Hitler would have created a paradise on Earth, particularly for white people,” Miller told Pakman.
When Stern asked whether he hated Jewish people or African-Americans more, Miller said, “Jews. A thousand times more. Compared to our Jewish problem, all other problems are mere distractions.”
“Let the blood of our enemies flood the streets, rivers, and fields of the nation in holy vengeance and justice,” Miller wrote 15 years ago in his declaration of war. Should prosecutors need to bolster their hate-crime case, there is certainly no shortage of very public evidence.
