After scanning the ocean floor for two weeks, on Friday the Bluefin-21 submarine is expected to finish searching the 6.2 square mile area that was considered the most likely resting place of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Since the mission failed to turn up any sign of the plane, searchers will begin scouring a wider area of the Indian Ocean. In an interview with Reuters, a senior U.S. defense official offered a dismal prognosis. “We went all in on this small area and didn’t find anything. Now you’ve got to go back to the big area,” the official said. “And now you’re talking years.”
