Boko Haram Releases Video of Missing Nigerian Girls

The Nigerian terrorist group responsible for kidnapping nearly 300 girls from a school in Chibok last month has put out a clip that claims to show the young women, who recite “Al-Fatiha,” the first chapter of the Quran, in Arabic. “These girls have become Muslims,” says Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in the video obtained by AFP. “We will never release them until after you release our brethren.”

A counter-terrorism expert told NBC that it was “unlikely” the Nigerian government would agree to trade prisoners belonging to the group for the girls. “My sense is that President Goodluck Jonathan is not someone who is interested in negotiation with Boko Haram,” he said.

The video is the first the world has seen of the students in the weeks since they were abducted and became an international cause under the banner, “Bring Back Our Girls.” Earlier, Boko Haram said it may sell them into slavery. “We have indeed liberated them,” says Shekau. “We have indeed liberated them.”
