Twenty-year-old Jamie Pugh is being questioned over the assault of Ruan Wen Hui, the 68-year-old grandfather who died on Saturday morning after being beaten and left on the street near his East Village home, DNAinfo reports. Though the attack was initially believed to be a random act of violence, investigators now say it began as an attempted robbery. A witness told the police that Pugh approached Hui and demanded, “Gimme something,” only to have the older man, who spoke limited English, try to walk away. The suspect responded by pushing Hui against a wall and stomping him on the head. The alleged explanation doesn’t make the incident — which was captured on surveillance video — any less horrific.
