The MTA’s “green fee” — the $1 people now have to pay for a new MetroCard — is working out well for both the environment and the agency. Since the charge was implemented in March 2013, MetroCard purchases have dropped by 71 percent. Meanwhile, the MTA has made at least $24 million from subway riders who remain determined to create trash (plus those who are just prone to losing stuff).
