Cats are not babies. Dogs are not babies. Only babies are babies, and Pope Francis thinks people should have babies. In a homily on Monday, the pontiff said married couples that choose pets over children are setting themselves up for “bitterness and loneliness” as they age. Everything before that will be great, though. “You can go explore the world, go on holiday, you can have a villa in the countryside, you can be care-free … it might be better — more comfortable — to have a dog, two cats, and the love goes to the two cats and the dog,” he said. Sounds fantastic. But according to his holiness, the downside comes later in life, when the marriage “comes to old age in solitude.” He said that’s when childless couples get bitter and lonley. Unlike couples with kids, who just get bitter.
