A U.S. victory over Portugal yesterday would have qualified the Americans for the knockout round while eliminating Portugal’s hopes of advancing out of the group stage. Of course, that didn’t happen: A Silvestre Varela header tied the game at two late in stoppage time, shocking the U.S. and keeping Portugal’s World Cup dreams alive.
