Although he faced more than 20 years after being convicted on 20 counts of bribery, tax evasion, and wire fraud earlier this year, former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin today landed an even decade. Prosecutors had recommended 15 years, citing 22 lies in Nagin’s testimony, “a performance that can only be summed up by his astounding unwillingness to accept any responsibility,” but the judge said she decided to “to downward depart from these guidelines” because Nagin was no criminal mastermind. The face of the city during Hurricane Katrina, Nagin said, “I’m trusting God is going to work all this out.”
