On Friday night — with the people of the Lower East Side distracted by their new, close proximity to the city’s 4th of July fireworks display — some thieves used a ladder to climb onto the roof of Delancey Street’s Popular Community Bank and sawed a big hole into it. Though the job took about a (presumably noisy) hour, nobody seems to have noticed crime because, as one neighborhood woman noted noted to the New York Post, the “fireworks were really loud.” Once inside, the robbers managed to grab about $290,000 in cash, according to Gothamist. Not bad for a day most people take off.
