Once reserved for Boy Scout Troops and Rotary Clubs, the Adopt-a-Highway program has become the latest obsession of fabulously wealthy Hamptonites eager to advertise on tiny billboards on the east end of Long Island, according to the New York Post. The tabloid calls the signs “status symbols” and details the cost one real estate agent pays for an “inferior spot” in a working-class part of Suffolk County: $2,500 up front and $650 a month. Or, as the guy who has an 11,000-square-foot home in Bridgehampton calls it, pocket change.
