Michael Sam Is (Probably) Headed to the Dallas Cowboys

Michael Sam was cut from the St. Louis Rams on Saturday, but it looks like he’s still on track to become the first openly gay athlete to play in the NFL. According to ESPN, Sam is on his way to Dallas to take a physical for the Cowboys on Wednesday, and if he passes, as expected, the Cowboys will sign him to their practice squad. Sam wouldn’t be allowed to play in games, but it looks like he’d have a better shot at making the team in Dallas than he did in St. Louis. He was the SEC’s co-defensive Player of the Year in 2013, and NBC Sports notes, “The Cowboys are in desperate need of help on defense.” NFL Media columnist Michael Silver says the Cowboys called veterans and team leaders on Tuesday to ask what they thought about hiring Sam, and “the response was a resounding ‘you should do it, we’re fine with it.’” And they didn’t even ask about Sam’s shower habits! We’re making progress, people.
