The NFL can flip its “weeks without a criminal investigation” sign back to zero, as the Daily News reports that Dallas Cowboys safety C.J. Spillman has been accused of sexually assaulting a young woman at the team’s hotel last month. The paper reports that attorney Gloria Allred sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on September 26, saying she’s representing a woman who claims she was raped by Spillman in the early morning on September 20, when the team was staying in the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

We have a sexual assault report we are investigating at this time, and it does involve C.J. Spillman,” police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling confirmed. “He is involved in the investigation. We are looking into the matter.”

Allred described the situation at a press conference earlier this week but did not name the player. She claims Spillman and a team official met with police on September 20, but he was still allowed to play the next day. “I am outraged that a woman can go to the police and make a report and the player and the representative of the team goes to the police and the NFL commissioner says he doesn’t know about it,” Allred said. “Once again, the NFL commissioner has dropped the ball.”

The woman is said to have filed a police report and undergone a rape kit examination, but Spillman has yet to be charged. “Any investigation involving a sexual assault does take some time,” Eberling told USA Today. “At this point, there has not been any arrests or formal charges have been filed or anything like that. But we’re continuing to investigate.”
