Horse Leads NYPD on Medium-Speed Car Chase Around Manhattan

Mayor de Blasio has not yet fulfilled his complicated campaign promise to ban carriage horses from New York City. On Sunday, the animal-rights activists got yet another vivid example of what happens when urban equine life goes wrong when a horse escaped, allegedly during a too-cold outdoor bath, and galloped down the middle of Eleventh Avenue. Police pursued with their lights on, just in case the animal felt like pulling over.

In response, Allie Feldman, executive director of NYCLASS, issued the following statement: “This is the latest example of why horse drawn carriages are not just inhumane but entirely unsafe in a city congested with cars, trucks and buses,” said the director of the #FreeTheHorses campaign. “It’s time for the City Council to act and get the carriage horses off the streets of New York City.”

While the animal was eventually caught, “We have no confirmation of how the horse is doing,” she added. Based on how the NYPD treats humans who run away from them, we don’t even want to know.
