As First Quarantine Ends, Mali Reports Second Ebola Death

A picture taken on June 28, 2014 shows a member of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) putting on protective gear at the isolation ward of the Donka Hospital in Conakry, where people infected with the Ebola virus are being treated. The World Health Organization has warned that Ebola could spread beyond hard-hit Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to neighbouring nations, but insisted that travel bans were not the answer. To date, there have been 635 cases of haemorrhagic fever in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, most confirmed as Ebola. A total of 399 people have died, 280 of them in Guinea. On the same day that 108 people linked to Mali’s first Ebola patient, a 2-year-old girl who died on October 24, were set to complete their 21-day quarantine, the government announced that a second person has died of the disease. The Malian nurse had treated a man who died last month after arriving from neighboring Guinea with Ebola-like symptoms. The Bamako clinic where the nurse worked is now in quarantine. Mali is the sixth West African nation to report cases of Ebola, which has killed nearly 5,000 people this year.
