Nanny Apologized for Killing Upper West Side Kids

Yoselyn Ortega, the 52-year-old nanny who killed two of her charges more than two years ago, asked for forgiveness for what she did, newly filed court papers show: “Oh, my God, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for what I’ve done. Relieve me of my misery,” said Ortega, who has pleaded not guilty to stabbing 6-year-old Lulu and 2-year-old Leo Krim in their Upper West Side apartment.

The Associated Press reports that she also told authorities that she attacked the kids because she was having financial problems and was angry at their parents for frequently changing her schedule and asking her to clean the home. “I had to do everything and take care of the kids. God forgive me, so many things they made me do. Pray for me,” she said. The documents were filed by Ortega’s lawyer, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg, who has requested the removal of a prosecutor from the case as well as the barring of the media from an upcoming hearing.

Van Leer-Greenberg has argued that Ortega is not mentally competent to stand trial, but a judge rejected that argument in the summer of 2013.
