Good news! New York City is again on pace to hit record lows of violent crime, with less than a month left in 2014. Despite the alleged return of the squeegee men as the harbinger of dark days, so far overall crime is down more than 4 percent compared to this time last year. Murders have dropped nearly 7 percent. If that rate stays steady through the end of the year, we could beat 2013’s record low to have the fewest homicides since the city began keeping reliable records in the 1960s.
