Charlie Hebdo Gunman Buried in Northeast France

Said Kouachi, the elder of the two brothers responsible for the Charlie Hebdo attack, has been very quietly buried in Reims, the city in northeast France where he’d lived for the last several years. Reims mayor Arnaud Robinet was resistant to the idea, having told a French radio station, “I don’t want a grave that serves to attract fanatics. I don’t want a place that promotes hate.” (This issue is not uncommon.) However, France grants people the right to be interred in their city of residence. Kouachi’s grave is unmarked, and the cemetery where it is located was not identified. Meanwhile, the New York Times reports that his brother, Cherif, is set to be buried in the Paris suburb of Gennevilliers. “He was living here,” said a Gennevilliers official. “Even if it doesn’t please us, we respect French law.”
