Gay Alabama Legislator Threatens to Out Adulterous Colleagues

Openly gay Alabama state representative Patricia Todd has had just about enough of her philandering anti-gay colleagues, who pursue extramarital affairs (or maybe even moonlit same-sex trysts) while trampling on her fledgling freedom to marry. Over the weekend, Birmingham representative decided to fight back against such hypocrisy on Facebook, threatening to out colleagues who gave anti-gay speeches after a judge overturned the state’s ban on gay marriage Friday. She wrote:

This (is) a time where you find out who are accepting, loving people. To say I am disappointed in Speaker Hubbard comment’s and Attorney General Strange choice to appeal the decision is an understatement. I will not stand by and allow legislators to talk about ‘family values’ when they have affairs, and I know of many who are and have. I will call our elected officials who want to hide in the closet OUT.

In an interview with the Alabama Times Daily, Todd — who describes herself as “progressive” and “fearless” on her website — clarified her comments, saying that it is “pretty well known” that some state politicians have affairs. She said she just wants them to “be careful what they’re saying, some of it might come back to stick on them.” The court ruling that prompted this exchange caused an outcry among some of the state’s more conservative politicians, and the judge even put a two-week hold on it — meaning that gay couples won’t be able to marry until February 9.
