Two people are dead following a shooting Tuesday afternoon at a veterans’ medical clinic in West Texas. The El Paso Veteran Affairs Clinic was put on lockdown at around 3:10 p.m. local time, and the El Paso Times reported that the shooter took his own life after killing a doctor. At a Tuesday evening press conference Army officials would not say how the shooter was killed or identify those involved in the incident. “All other VA patients and staff are safe,” said Major General Stephen Twitty. “Everything is under control and there is no immediate threat to Fort Bliss or the local community.”

Following the shooting, the facility was quickly placed on lockdown and nearby streets were blocked off. The FBI’s Doug Lindquist said the VA showed “a model of how to respond” to an active shooting. The agency is taking the lead in investigating the incident, and Lindquist said there are hundreds of witnesses to interview. “They were here seeking medical assistance,” he said.
