She will join The Guardian’s United States–focused online presence, Guardian U.S., as a contributing opinion writer, editor-in-chief Katharine Viner announced on Tuesday. In a memo, Viner wrote that Manning, who is currently serving a 35-year sentence for leaking national security information to WikiLeaks, will write “occasionally from Fort Leavenworth prison on the subjects of war, gender, and freedom of information.” Manning’s byline already appears on the site, which published her essay about the transgender-civil-rights movement in December.
