The mayor of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, got an unsolicited ear piercing this Groundhog Day, when Jimmy — the town’s very own ‘hog — leaned over and gave him a little bite. To his credit, Mayor Jonathan Freund barely flinched, and went on to announce that Jimmy hadn’t seen his shadow, meaning that there will be an early spring.
To add to the day’s drama, one of Jimmy’s handlers challenged Freund’s prognosis, saying that according to tradition, Monday’s weather spelled six more weeks of winter. And, not content to let the disagreement stand, the mayor’s office quickly followed up today that only he has the right to interpret the groundhog’s actions. All’s well that ends well, though, and at least he didn’t drop the thing.
