A homophobic Russian politician found himself an unwitting participant in a piece of gay propaganda, after two women on his flight home from Moscow spotted him and took a photo of themselves kissing as he worked in the background. The politician, Vitaly Milonov, is a city legislator in St. Petersburg and one of the most tireless pushers of the country’s anti-gay legislation.

According to a social-media post by an activist named Ksenia — both the star and photographer of the selfie — Milonov didn’t notice their antics at first, but later tried to hide behind a tablet computer. While the exact duration of the lip-lock is unknown, it was clearly long enough for an excited male passenger to pull out his own phone to document the display. Ksenia said that she and her pal are “very happy” with how the shot turned out, but Milonov certainly isn’t.

This shows that these people are not of a normal sexual orientation, but that their sexual deviance shows in all aspects of their lives,” Milonov later grumbled about the incident. “I didn’t understand what they are doing but they have a nice sense of humor. I also have a good sense of humor,” he added. “I will perhaps continue this joke by closing their gay club in St. Petersburg, or ban them from having meetings in public places, that’s also a funny step.”
