During a Tuesday press conference, White House spokesman Josh Earnest admitted that Kayla Mueller wasn’t the last American being held captive in Syria, though he didn’t say whether other hostages were in the custody of ISIS or someone else. “Sadly, I cannot say that [she was the last],” Earnest said, refusing to name names. “There is at least one other hostage that is held in the region.” Several other Americans have gone missing in Syria since the civil war began almost four years ago. Perhaps the most prominent among them is Austin Tice, a freelance journalist who was kidnapped in Southwestern Syria in 2012. He is believed to have been held, at least originally, by Bashar al-Assad’s regime. His family and friends renewed their effort to save him Tuesday with the #FreeAustinTice hashtag on social media.
