Would You Live Near the Guy Who Shot President Reagan?

After he shot President Reagan and three others in 1981, John Hinckley Jr. was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Doctors say the chances that Hinckley is still dangerous are “decidedly low,” and for the past year he’s been spending 17 days per month at his mother’s home in Williamsburg, Virginia. Court hearings on whether to expand Hinckley’s release are set to begin this week, and some locals aren’t thrilled about the prospect of living near an attempted presidential assassin. Real-estate agent John Womeldorf tells the Associated Press he’s been warning those looking at homes in the gated community. “I just matter-of-factly ask them ‘Do you remember the guy that shot President Reagan?’ And usually they do and I say, ‘Well his mother lives here and he gets released a number of times a year and comes and stays with his mom,’” Womeldorf said. He reports that for the most part, “It’s been a non-issue.”
