David Petraeus, a retired army general who commanded U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, was sentenced to two years of probation and a $100,000 fine on Thursday for sharing classified information with his former love interest/biographer. The fine was $60,000 more than originally expected — the federal judge, David Keesler, wanted to provide an imposing deterrent for others who might want to follow in the former CIA director’s footsteps. Because Petraeus agreed to a plea deal, the world will not have the opportunity to see what a trial with these sort of plot details would look like, and Petraeus will avoid jail time. “I want to apologize for the pain my actions caused,” Petraeus said.
