The New England Patriots visited the White House on Thursday to celebrate their Super Bowl win, and President Obama told a Deflategate joke so bad that coach Bill Belichick was compelled to give the leader of the free world a thumbs-down.
“I usually tell a bunch of jokes at these events,” Obama said, “but with the Patriots in town, I was afraid that 11 out of 12 of them would fall flat.” After the event, Patriot’s tight end Rob Gronkowski, who owns a party bus that requires all who ride it to appropriately worship Taylor Swift, explained that the president probably made the joke because he was “getting wasted.”
Obama also, inevitably, told jokes about Gronk during his remarks. “I told him to keep his shirt on,” he said. “He asked me what would happen if he took it off. I said Secret Service probably wouldn’t like it. He said, ‘What could they do to me?’”
Reporters asked Gronkowski why he decided not to dance during his stop at the White House. He explained that his teammates, whom he relies on to accompany his well-known moves with song and beatboxing, “were scared so there was no dancing today baby.”
