8 Actually Good Things That Happened This Week

Any week that begins with the celebration of a drug that makes you just want to eat and sleep for a million years is going to feel especially long, and this one was no exception. Chillier temps may have descended on New York, but the Bruce Jenner–Diane Sawyer interview will swoop in tonight to warm your cold heart. Grab an afternoon snack and behold eight truly good things that happened this week.

1. Scientists discovered a frog that looks exactly like Kermit. A new species of frog called the Hyalinobatrachium dianae has been located in the jungles of Costa Rica. Normally no one would care because like, ew, the environment, but it looks exactly like Kermit from The Muppets. Boom:

2. One start-up announced their plans to release an inexpensive breast cancer gene test. Color Genomics has developed an at-home saliva test for mutations in the cancer-risk genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. The test will cost $249, which according to the Times is one tenth of the price of any test currently on the market. Democratization of cancer gene testing could help bolster early detection.

3. The trees have finally started to bloom! And the results are beautiful.

4. A toddler whose feet were amputated got a special new puppy with only one paw. Three-year-old Sapphyre Johnson was born with a birth defect that required her to have her feet amputated. This week she received a special new pet who will understand her better than anybody else: Lieutenant Dan, a white German shepherd puppy born with only one paw. The two have already become fast friends.

5. The Mets are on a hot streak. The New York Mets, perhaps tired of disappointing their fan base year after year, have officially rallied, breathing new life into Citi Field. The team is on an 11-game winning streak, which ties the 1995 franchise record for the longest-ever winning streak. Believe the hype!

6. A woman wrote a very impassioned and very expletive-laced legal brief.  Tamah Jada Clark had her civil-rights lawsuit dismissed by a judge recently, and she is simply not having it. In a searing legal brief that went viral this week, Clark wrote things like, “Just for the record: you are a hoe. This court is a hoe. And I will backhand you both, should you continue to waste my time.” Enjoy the highly entertaining document below.

7. Swedish cops vacationing in New York helped break up a subway fight. A subway operator on a 6 train called for help over the intercom on Wednesday, and five Swedish cops who were on vacation in Manhattan came to his rescue, helping to break up a bloody fight between two homeless men happening on one of the cars. “We got to make sure that nobody gets hurt,” one man said. Worst vacation ever, though.

8. Two kittens got into a box fight. But lucky for us, it’s adorable.
