Poor Little Alligator’s Last Act Was Crossing the Road

On Thursday afternoon, the NYPD busted a two-foot-long alligator trying to cross Ninth Avenue at 205th Street. (Assuming the gator was someone’s lost or abandoned pet, his existence in New York was illegal.) “Cops at the scene theorized the reptile might have been looking for water near the Harlem Bay,” reports the New York Daily News, poignantly.

The creature was captured and taken to New York Animal Care Centers to await transfer to a sanctuary, but he won’t get the chance to escape the city for the summer: According to the Daily News, the little guy died overnight. These things happen, but it never gets any easier to blog about.
