On Monday morning, the South Carolina Senate began its debate over whether to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol. While a recent survey indicates that the majority of the legislature will vote to get rid of the stars and bars, South Carolina is still South Carolina, which means that some lawmakers remain determined to defend the Confederacy. Among them is Republican State Senator Lee Bright, who kicked things off by … freaking out about the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of same-sex marriage.
“Friday night, I watched the White House be lit up in the abomination colors,” Lee shouted in reference to this pretty rainbow display. “It’s time for the church to rise up! It’s time for the state of state of South Carolina to rise up!”
“Our governor called us in to deal with the flag that sits out front. Let’s deal with the national sin that we face today. We talk about abortion, but this gay marriage thing — I believe that we’ll be one nation gone under,” Lee continued. “We can rally together and talk about a flag all we want but the devil is taking control of this land and we’re not stopping him.” He left the podium after concluding his anti-gay rant, but don’t worry: You can learn all about his position on the Confederate flag on his Facebook page. “Right now, we have an opportunity to protect the symbol of our Southern heritage,” he writes. “The Confederate battle flag proudly represents states’ rights, so let’s fight to keep it flying!”
