Former President Jimmy Carter announced on Wednesday that he has cancer. “Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” the 39th president said in a statement released by his nonprofit. “A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.” Last week, Carter had an operation to “remove a small mass in his liver” in Atlanta. Carter, who is 90 years old — the second-oldest living president after George H.W. Bush — just finished a book tour for A Full Life: Reflections at 90.
