Security Officer Killed in Shooting at Federal Building in Lower Manhattan

A security guard was fatally shot in the lobby of a federal office building at 201 Varick Street on Friday afternoon.

The shooter killed himself at the scene. The 12-story federal building, which contains an immigration court, Justice and Labor Department branches, and a post office, was evacuated after the shooting.

According to PIX11, the 53-year-old private security officer was in cardiac arrest at the scene and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the gunmen has been identified as a 68-year-old man from Fort Lee, New Jersey. The NYPD is unsure what his motive may have been.

There was a heavy police presence in the area; many buildings near the shooting told people inside not to leave after the incident took place. Traffic delays are expected around Houston and Varick streets.
