Vice Media Writers Jump on the Unionizing Bandwagon

Those working on the editorial side of Vice Media voted to unionize this week, according to The Wall Street Journal. The writers and editors at Vice will join the Writers Guild of America, East — the same union that Gawker Media and Salon staffers voted to join earlier this summer. The 45 editorial employees at The Guardian U.S. voted to unionize just last week. Vice Media — which has been criticized for paying employees poorly and describes itself as  “an ever-expanding nebula of immersive investigative journalism, uncomfortable sociological examination, uncouth activities, making fun of people who should know better, and award-winning documentaries” — is the biggest digital-media company to give organized labor a try, although writers make up a small share of its employees.
