On The Late Show Monday night, Stephen Colbert interrupted Texas senator Ted Cruz’s Reagan reverie to ask if he agreed with the former Republican president’s decision to give amnesty to undocumented immigrants, raise taxes, or compromise with Democrats when necessary. “Of course not,” he said, explaining that “as I travel the country, I haven’t seen anyone saying, ‘The thing we want from Republicans is to give in more to Barack Obama and the direction we’re going.’”
Colbert, who was getting far more applause than his guest, followed up, asking, “Will you be willing to compromise with the other side?”
Cruz didn’t exactly say yes, although he did concede that his opponents may not be “diabolical.” The interview later shifted to same-sex marriage, and Cruz’s belief that it is an issue that should be left to the states — a discussion that led the audience to begin booing the presidential candidate. Colbert quickly made them feel guilty about what they had done. “Guys, however you feel, he’s my guest, so please don’t boo him.”
Over on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon talked to Carly Fiorina, who has been getting a lot more attention after her two debate performances. The host asked her about Ben Carson saying recently that a Muslim shouldn’t ever be president. The former head of Hewlett-Packard said, “I think that’s wrong … I actually believe that people of faith make better leaders. Whether they are Christians, as I am — my faith has sustained me through some very bad times. I’ve battled cancer, I’ve lost a child, I’ve been tested. But whether it’s a person of Christian faith or Jewish faith or Muslim faith or other faiths, I think faith gives us humilit and empathy and optimism. And I think those are important things.”
Because this is The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she also sang a song she wrote for her dog.
