One person is dead after a shooting that took place in a subway station in midtown Manhattan on Monday morning. Police are still looking for the gunmen and two other suspects, who may have left the scene in a silver car.
The New York Times reports that the shooting began around 6 a.m., after an argument outside the entrance to the A, C, and E subway station at Eighth Avenue and West 35th Street — not far from Penn Station. The shooting was preceded by an argument in a nearby McDonald’s — one that the Times said was known as “zombie McDonald’s … junkie McDonald’s” and “a drug addict’s paradise” in an article from this summer titled “A Manhattan McDonald’s With Many Off-the-Menu Sales.” The man who was killed was 43-year-old Angel Quinones; at least two other men in their 40s were wounded and taken to Bellevue in serious condition — one man was shot in the neck and stomach, the other in his leg. Quinones was reportedly pronounced dead at the bottom of the subway stairwell. Witnesses told reporters that the victims were all patients at a methadone clinic around the corner. All three had been arrested on drug-related charges several times in the past.
“Someone came running into the McDonald’s and said, ‘He got shot!’” one woman told DNAinfo. “I looked down the steps and there he was down on the floor. Blood was pouring out of his head. There was a big puddle. He was on his side. He wasn’t moving. It was horrible.”
The streets near the shooting — an area teeming with people during rush hour — were closed while the police began investigating the incident.
