Santiago Calatrava’s glorious boondoggle, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, is finally beginning to take its final form, wedged in between the office towers next to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. But now it’s having another setback: The Times reports that the underground mall that centers on the big white spiny Oculus is suffering from a water leak.
And nobody shops till the leak stops.
The $5.1 billion PATH train station and shopping center was supposed to open in 2015, but in August the mall operator, Westfield, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told investors they’d have to wait until the first half of 2016.
The Westfield World Trade Center mall, which will include tenants like Apple, Eataly, Michael Kors, and Kate Spade, occupies the bases of four towers, linked by concourses.
In the underground concourse around 3 World Trade Center, there now seems to be a leak, the Times reports. Water has soaked through the ground, already affecting four of the retail spaces, but workers are doing their best to keep the rest dry.
“The dripping has been reduced dramatically,” Steven Plate, director of World Trade Center construction for the Port Authority, told the Times. “We’ve made some significant progress.”
