In light of the controversy over the U.S. accepting Syrian refugees, several Republicans — including presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush — spent the day trying to out-Islamophobe each other, declaring that only Christians should be allowed into the country. Conservative mogul Rupert Murdoch summed up the argument on Monday evening, tweeting:

But on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, Chris Christie made a bold stand against religious discrimination. When asked if he would allow any Syrians refugees into the country, even if they’re “orphans under the age of five,” the New Jersey governor and presidential candidate said he will treat all Syrians equally — by banning all of them, even small children.

“I don’t trust this administration to effectively vet the people who are proposed to be coming in, in order to protect the safety and security of the American people so I would not permit them in,” Christie said. “The fact is, that we need appropriate vetting and I don’t think orphans under five should be admitted into the United States at this point. They have no family here. How are we going to care for these folks?” He added, “We need to put the safety and security of the American people first.”

Hey, maybe some kindhearted American families could adopt the young, innocent victims of the unrest in Syria. You know, if the orphaned children can prove they’re Christians.
