A Day With Julián Castro: Cabinet Secretary, Legal-Pad Enthusiast, Rising Democrat

ulián Castro was sworn in as the 16th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on July 28, 2014. In this role, Castro oversees 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion, using a performance-driven approach to achieve the Department's mission of expanding opportunity for all Americans.
“I’ve tried to explain to my daughter that I work in housing, but her understanding is that I work with the president.”

For the latest edition of “Life in Pictures,” photographer Mark Peterson followed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro in Washington, D.C. on October 1 – while the 41-year-old former San Antonio mayor celebrated the government not shutting down. Ahead, Castro talks gentrification at the Atlantic’s Washington Ideas Forum, his affinity with Cory Booker, and his mother’s work in the Mexican-American civil-rights movement.
