Four elementary-school students were suspended from a school in New Jersey after attempting to create a highly explosive device – by mixing a bunch of spicy things together.
The group of 10- and 11-year-olds at Clifton Elementary School No. 11 constructed a “bomb” using an empty Altoids tin and filling it with vegetable oil, salad dressing, and cinnamon sticks, NJ.com reports, and intended to detonate the device during a field trip to Clifton High School. Authorities said the concoction was “an immature and unrealistic plot,” with Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Vales stating that it was “neither flammable, nor dangerous, nor did any student possess any type of lighting device.”
Although the bomb was benign (albeit probably pungent), school officials did discover that the students had written up a letter of intent. “It was not a prank,” Detective Sargent Robert Bracken told NJ.com. “They had a legitimate plan.” All students involved have been questioned by authorities, but so far, they were all released to their parents without charges, ABC7 reports.
Only a few weeks ago, an even younger New Jersey kid – this time a 9-year-old – told his teachers that he had a bomb in his backpack.
