Kim Davis’s 15 minutes of fame are stretching into the New Year. After boldly preventing several same-sex couples from getting marriage licenses in a timely fashion, the Kentucky county clerk got to meet Pope Francis, and now she’s at the center of a State of the Union pseudo-controversy. The Washington Examiner reports that the Family Research Council arranged for Davis and her attorney to sit in the House audience during President Obama’s speech on Tuesday night. The White House has invited Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff whose Supreme Court case led to the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide, to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama, so things are bound to get awkward — or they would, if there were any chance that the two were going to interact. While we probably won’t see a marriage-equality brawl break out on the House floor, this should give TV anchors something to talk about while they’re killing time before the debate starts.
