It could have been that Eliot Spitzer was making a desperate plea to save his relationship. Could be that he has too much money to care about a six-figure donation. Or maybe he just really doesn’t like Hillary Clinton. However he meant it, Spitzer and his mother, Anne, threw $100,000 at a Martin O’Malley super-pac, Generation Forward PAC, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Friday.

Perhaps significantly, the donation came in late September, when Spitzer was still dating Lis Smith, O’Malley’s deputy campaign manager. They have since broken up.

Generation Forward raised $514,000 in the entire second half of last year — about 20 percent of that came from the Spitzers. O’Malley is currently polling just over 2 percent nationally. Spitzer, the former governor of New York State until a 2009 prostitution scandal took him down, has been very critical of Clinton, recently saying on David Axelrod’s podcast that in a 2007 debate Clinton “waffled and waffled and waffled” on immigration.
