Senator Marco Rubio went on The Tonight Show on Thursday, and revealed that he has an impeccable sense of New York tourist values.
He and his soon-to-be wife Jeanette were visiting the city — and felt very frozen because they are from Florida and can’t handle a nice 40 degree day — and Rubio wanted to propose to her from the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day, because Jeanette loved Sleepless in Seattle.
It was pretty hard to get her to agree to go up to the top because she was so cold, and Rubio still wishes that the movie ended somewhere flatter. He definitely wasn’t alone in picking that place to propose; a New York Times article from 2006, wondering how many proposals might have taken place on the observation deck, talked to a woman from Sweden in a wedding dress who declared, “It’s such a New York thing to do.”
Rubio also talked about the time he ruined a pair of his now-signature boots at a foam party in college, and how he would rather be NFL commissioner than vice-president because you get to suspend people. It must be a Florida thing — Jeb Bush once said he considered being NFL commissioner, too.
