Nearly a year after the death of beloved media columnist David Carr, the New York Times is ready to debut his replacement — who happens to be someone who’s worked at the newspaper for ages. Jim Rutenberg, who has covered elections, the White House, City Hall, and media for the Times since 2000, and was most recently writing for the magazine, will start writing the column — which will appear in the paper on Mondays — in the near future. Rutenberg covered media at the New York Observer prior to moving to the Times. Before Rutenberg was chosen, according to Variety, “Editors were said to have considered everyone from Sarah Ellison of Vanity Fair to David Folkenflik of NPR to another internal candidate, Jonathan Mahler.”
“There can never be another David Carr,” Rutenberg told his paper’s media reporter, “so I can only hope to do his legacy, and the paper, proud.”
