President Obama Seeks Diplomatic Resolution to Primary Conflict

Barack Obama is about to earn that Nobel Peace Prize. Late Tuesday night, Obama congratulated Hillary Clinton for clinching the Democratic nomination, putting the presidential seal of approval on her declaration of victory. But he also congratulated Bernie Sanders for running a campaign that energized “millions of Americans with his commitment to issues like fighting economic inequality and special interests’ influence on our politics.” Most significantly, the president honored Sanders’s request for a White House meeting on Thursday, to discuss the “significant issues at stake in this election,” and, implicitly, the terms of the senator’s surrender. We appear to be on the cusp of a diplomatic resolution to the Democrats’ civil war.
