Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote keeps rising. The Democratic presidential candidate has so far received 2 million more votes than President-elect Donald Trump: 64,225,534 votes versus 62,209,804 votes. Votes from New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland, and California — all blue states — helped push over the 2 million mark. By comparison, fellow Democrat Al Gore — who also won the popular vote, but lost the Electoral College — won by a margin of 500,000.
Despite somme calls to audit election results, Clinton’s vast popular-vote lead will probably change nothing. At least six electors have said they’d act as “faithless electors” and go against their states’ popular vote to try to block Trump, but that probably won’t tip the scales either. Plus, had the popular vote mattered, Trump, by his own account, “would have campaigned in N.Y. Florida and California and won even bigger and more easily.”
