On Tuesday, Texas agriculture commissioner Sid Miller shared some exciting polling data with his Twitter followers.
But denizens of social media were less interested in those sweet new survey numbers than they were with the fact that a high-ranking state government employee — who has become Donald Trump’s “go-to” surrogate in the Lonestar State — had just referred to Hillary Clinton using a derogatory term for female genitalia.
However, Miller hastened to delete the tweet and announce that his account “HAS BEEN HACKED. The disgusting re-tweet has been removed and we have changed all account passwords. Be advised.” (The tweet in which Miller made this announcement has since been deleted).
Miller’s office offered a slightly different explanation, saying in a statement, “The campaign was retweeting information today and inadvertently retweeted a tweet that they were not aware contained a derogatory term. The tweet was taken down as soon as possible. Commissioner Miller finds the term vulgar and offensive and apologizes to anyone who may have seen it.”
So the most likely explanation here is that Miller thinks the phrase “hacked” means “incompetently operated by a soon-to-fired intern,” and that his campaign thinks “retweeting” means “copying text from someone else’s tweet and pasting into one’s own without citation.”
After all, what reason do we have to think supporters of the Republican nominee might be inclined toward virulent misogyny?
