Profile

It may be galling for the envious to admit, but New York would be a sorry place without the Gagosian Gallery. Following its shockingly good spring Roy Lichtenstein show, and excellent group outings like “Prefab” and “Beneath the Underdog,” comes the equally riveting “Retrospective.” This show looks at artists looking at what they like to look at more than anything else: their own work. There’s a 1978 Warhol painting of Warhol motifs like the electric chair and flowers. There’s a tremendous room of almost every video Douglas Gordon has ever made. There’s also an astonishing book by Chris Burden, Tom Freidman’s sprawl of bits from every piece he’s ever made, and much more worth seeing.
