511 Gallery moved from the heart of Chelsea’s gallery district in spring 2008, and is now located in a salon-style setting several avenues east. While the space needn’t be viewed by appointment, it is located in an apartment, so you’ll need to be buzzed up. This cuts down on walk-ins, and as a result, a significant chunk of visitors are serious collectors. You’ll be offered a drink or cocktail upon entering the main viewing area, which is a light-flooded living room. Since the space is fully furnished—designed in a contemporary but warm aesthetic—it’s perfect for openings and artist receptions. Information placards do not accompany the art, which only adds to the feeling that you’re in someone’s home viewing their private collection. The permanent works are a mix of photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture. And diversity is a hallmark of temporary shows as well, with both group and solo exhibitions.
