In 1996, Abby Messitte and Elizabeth Burke created a vibrant salon based on their shared pop-influenced aesthetic. The exhibits—largely solo shows, sometimes an artist’s first—show no loyalty to any movement or genre. Clementine is as at ease with graffiti as it is with urban photography. Whitney Biennial's Robyn O'Neill has shown his eerie graphite landscapes here; Taylor McKimens' paintings have also graced the walls. When Messitte and Burke were rejected from the 2005 Armory, the press-savvy duo went directly to the public. They launched Art Rock, an installation at Rockefeller Center supported by designer Todd Oldham, Lucky and Cargo.
